Session Description

As telemental health continues to expand, counselors are increasingly called to navigate complex ethical considerations when working with rural communities and other special populations. Recent developments, including the passage of the Counseling Compact in Kansas, have further broadened opportunities for interstate practice, making ethical competence in telemental health both timely and essential.

This pre-conference session will examine key ethical issues related to telemental health practice, including access and equity, informed consent, confidentiality and privacy, risk management across state lines, cultural and contextual responsiveness, and professional responsibility when serving rural and underserved populations. Participants will engage in guided discussion and applied ethical decision-making using real-world scenarios to strengthen ethical awareness and clinical judgment in virtual service delivery.

Designed for counselors, supervisors, and counselor educators, this session emphasizes ethical practice as a foundation for professional sustainability and client welfare in an evolving telemental health landscape.
